Polties can be really fun ghosts! Once you witness your first Polty Throw, you'll be piling up items every time this ghost is a possibility. They can throw items like crazy. In fact, that's one of its secret abilities: throwing items with force. Its second ability is being the only ghost that can throw multiple items at the exact same time. The third ability manifests during a hunt: higher number of item throws during a hunt.
1. Force
The Poltergeist can interact with items by throwing them with a force of 2-6, compared to other ghosts' force of 1-3. What these numbers mean exactly, I don't know to be truthful. (I got them from the Fan Wiki.) But it does offer a comparison against other ghosts. If you notice quite a few throws of crazy distance and speed (velocity, to be technical), definitely keep the Polty in mind.
2. The Polty Throw
This is one of my favoriate mechanics in the game. The Poltergeist is the only ghost that can throw more than one item at the exact same time (if the items are near each other).
Test: If you pile a few (or lots of) items together, there is a chance it will "explode" the pile. Each item will give off an EMF 3 for its throw interaction, but you may also be able to catch an EMF 2 specifically for the Polty Throw interaction. (You could try moving every item away from the event location until no items are left, and try to find EMF 2. This can take time, though, and EMF signals only last 20 seconds.)
When in line of sight of this chaotic event, each player's sanity will decrease by 2% times the number of items thrown.
Click here to see a short video of a Polty Throw. (Yeah, our sanity must have dropped to 0 after that!)
3. Hunt Item Throwing
When ghosts are hunting, they have a chance to throw any items that are near them. For all ghosts other than the Poltergeist, this chance to throw an item is 50% every .5 seconds (every half second).
The Poltergeist however, has a 100% chance every .5 seconds to throw an item if an item is in range. This can make the Polty kind of obvious during a hunt.
Test: In preparation for a hunt, find a path where you will lure the ghost. This can be in a line, or it can be a loop around a counter or other area. Instead of piling items in one spot like a Polty pile, leave items scattered in a line/loop where you will be luring the ghost during the hunt. Watch the hunting ghost throw items. If there are enough items in reach and it does NOT throw an item every half second, it is not a Poltergeist. If it does, it most likely is one.
As of 5/31/23: In my recent gameplay, I've noticed Poltergeists not throwing items as often as they should during the frist half-ish of the hunt. After about the first half of the hunt, they then start throwing as often as a Polty should.
This is just my experience, though it may be a current bug.
