I am lazy. If I buy food to cook, I end up making a peanut butter & jelly. Vegetables rot in my fridge before I’m motivated to use them. Veggies are lacking in my diet because I don’t like the taste of healthy food. If this sounds at all relatable, let me tell you about my Daily Harvest experience so far.
Because their dishes are pretty much all vegetables and maybe a sauce, I did not expect their items to be tasty, but I have finished every portion I've made so far without issue. While it is relatively expensive, I'm saving money on my usual grocery delivery fees and Uber Eats splurges. While I won’t review every dish I sampled, I’ll summarize all of the TYPEs of dishes and a couple that I enhanced for taste.
1. The LATTEs are not worth it for me. I drink one cup of coffee a morning for the caffeine; the lattes (except the Coffee and Almond) do not contain any (or any significant) amount of caffeine. For the price of $6/2 pods, the Ginger & Turmeric were tasty enough and even slightly filling, but I won’t be adding this to my order anymore after trying the Coffee and Almond, which actually have the caffeine content of a cup of coffee (125 milligrams).
a. This Might Be For You If: you are looking for a coffee ritual replacement; you are looking for a drink that is slightly filling to hold you over until your next snack/meal
2. The harvest BOWLs I had (Cauliflower Rice + Kimchi and Broccoli Rice + Dill Pilaf) were tasty enough to finish, were filling for a few hours lasting me until my next meal, and were a large portion size for one meal. I would not split the bowls into two meals, as that wouldn’t be quite enough for a whole meal, but it is a relatively large portion.
a. Enhancement: for the broccoli and pilaf dish, I added a handful of shredded cheese. It went from pretty darn tasty to delicious.
b. This Might Be For You If: you need veggies; you need a good-sized portion for one meal; you need to feel fuller longer; you could split in half to use alongside an entrée
3. The harvest BAKEs are a chance to get more bang for your buck in my opinion. I tried my first one (Chickpea + Coconut Curry) as instructed: baked in the oven and eaten as one portion. Quite tasty and spicy, but I could barely finish it because the portion was so big.
a. Enhancement: I baked the whole Gigante Bean + Artichoke Olio, but split it in half. I added a bit of cream cheese, and ate it with tortilla chips both times. Tasted exactly like a restaurant artichoke dip, but with way more veggie content.
b. This Might Be For You If: you want more value for what you’re paying; you want more veggies in your diet but aren’t necessarily stingy about adding other carbs or enhancements like chips or tortillas to pad out the portions; you need a very large portion for one meal
4. The SMOOTHIES were as to be expected: fruits (and usually veggies) in pretty acceptably tasting mixes. I am used to making protein powder smoothies with frozen fruit and sometimes adding spinach, so the taste and texture is familiar to me; but might not be for everyone. These are not as filling; drinking your meal isn’t as satisfying as eating.
a. This Might Be For You If: you want to make a meal to go; you don’t like to eat food earlier in the day; you are thirsty but want something a little more substantial and slightly filling (I found them less filling than the Ginger & Turmeric lattes, surprisingly)
5. The BITEs were all delicious so far! And surprisingly filling. I would eat 3 or 4 bites and feel satiated for a couple hours. Yeah, it surprised me, too. I’m not sure if my freezer is set too cold, but I had to let them sit for a few minutes before I could bite into them. Probably my favorite item; I will be adding 3 or 4 containers of bites to every order going forward.
a. This Might Be For You If: you want a very tasty snack; you want something on the go or something quick; you feel peckish
6. I’ve tried one FLATBREAD so far (Artichoke + Spinach). I ate the whole thing and it actually felt like a little too much food, even though it looks relatively small. I might try splitting into two meals next time. The taste got a bit old by the time I got 2/3 of the way through, but that could be because it had very rich or strong tastes.
a. This Might Be For You If: you crave pizza or something handheld and hot but need veggies
Overall, this service worked well for me on the first delivery. (I, as a grown adult, got to play with dry ice until it evaporated.) I’m looking forward to trying more dishes, especially the Squash + Wild Gratin which is said to taste like a burrito bowl. (My usual breakfasts are homemade breakfast tacos/burritos/bowls.)
I’ll keep you updated on the next delivery of dishes!
